If you just want to casually gain some familiarity with SAS up to the level of Base Programming certification, then probably the Little SAS Book alone will be enough. (At least it worked for me.) That book is economically priced and is famous for being concise and clear. However, when you actually program in SAS or even prepare for the Advanced Programming certification, you will soon find yourself outgrow the "Little" book. Then you need another book like "Learning SAS by Example" to elevate you to the next level. This book is not only concise and clear, but also encyclopaedic and systematic. There are many good "programming by example" SAS books on the market. I am particularly impressed by this book’s broad coverage of practical topics and their methodical treatments.

The book is divided into four parts.

Part 1 is a short introduction extended to details like priority of arithmetic operations and Program Data Vector– stuff that not only beginners will find useful, but also more experienced programmers would not mind to keep as reference.

Part 2 drills on the DATA step. The chapters progress from file I/O, to creating data set, then creating formats and labels, and then writing conditionals and loops. This is just the logical order of a SAS program. Once you have the basics, then the book moves on to the next most common programming issues such as functions (dates, numeric, character), data subsetting, and arrays. These (plus half of Part 3) can essentially get you through the Base exam.

Part 3 covers mundane topics such as report customisation. All major means of data display, i.e.

After taking several health behavior classes focused on theory, I would say this is the worst book I’ve ever read on health behavior theory. It’s a very hard read to get through because it’s not well written, it does not mesh with the current literature on all theories, and it over-emphasizes some very odd examples. Application is important, but by the 5th example, it’s redundant. If this is for a class, rent it, do NOT buy it. Trust me, you will never use it again. If this is for your own information on behavior health theories, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It will not be helpful for you, and I would definitely argue how it presents at least one of the theories it includes.

This is my first review on textbooks. There are just so many textbooks you need to buy as a grad student, but only so few one might actually enjoy while reading/making notes. This is one of those few for me. Very easy to read and follow. I like how authors always had multiple examples to demonstrate how theories and concepts can be applied in each of the chapters. Good textbook!

I am working on a PhD in Nursing in which Health Promotion is an integral theory and health an integral concept. I borrowed this text from University of California Berkeley along with many other theory texts. I will likely use the book to help me write my qualifying theory paper and cite these authors for their novel approach to health behavior theory.
The mixing of individual with ecologic perspectives fits my own view while not having to settle on any one theory as the perfect fit because as DiClemente and Salazar explain there is complexity in many ways of looking at health behaviors. The authors highlight many of my favored behavioral theories yet blend the structural environmental perspectives into the mix. A truly original work that not only tells us what is out there but provides new perspectives on understanding what is already known. Bravo, and thank you authors!

The first 30 pages alone would have been enough to rank 10 stars! Just by reading this book I became optimistic about my practice and it began to fill. Each chapter gave me ideas I never thought of before. It helped me work smarter – with less effort, much more pleasure. By the time I finished this book I was trying to decide whether to raise my rates or start a waiting list, and I was seeing IDEAL clients, taking no HMO’s, charging more than other psychiatrists in my area, and looking forward to going to work each day. This book blends business with integrity and taught me to value myself, my practice and my clients. I recommend it to ANYONE in the health care field. It made it so easy, and helped me to confront business aspects I hadn’t been paying attention to. And she gives so may real life examples, it feels do-able. This book is worth a years’ worth of high quality business consulting. I recommend it to any of my clients who have private practices from yoga instruction to massage therapists, and to all my friends in the psychotherapy field. I have never made so much money or felt so good about my practice in my life. She even makes talking to clients about money something I can now do in a way that feels both appropriate and respectful – to me and to them. What I have learned has already netted me literally thousands of dollars. I have never written a book review before, but I have to express my gratitude in some way, and this is my attempt to let others know that with the suggestions, tips and encouragement from this book, it is not only possible to make a living doing therapy, but to build an IDEAL practice without having to contract with any insurance companies. What a God-send of a book.

I am a clinical social worker, in private practice for quite a while. Last year without knowing why, my client count began to drop off. I got worried. A colleague in my peer supervision group swore by this book. (Her practice stays full all the time.) I think it is the most helpful book on practice-building and marketing for therapists I have ever read. The information in the book is really useful and solid. But more than that, the tone of the book is so calming and inspiring. The author clearly knows her topic, and she finds ways to explain exactly what steps you need to take to become more profitable and grow your practice. Unlike other non-therapist marketers, she understands the mind of a healing professional and the mental shifts in thinking that introverts like me need to go through in order to follow through on networking or getting more boundaries in place for my billing policy. On the back of the book, one reviewer (who was a social worker of the year!) said the book should be the bible of every clinician. I agree. I keep it on my bedside table, and when I can’t sleep because I am worried about my practice, I open up this book and feel inspired. Her new workbook is great as well.

This book gave me the vision to open my own private practice. It provided me with the necessary information to make me feel confident when I finally made the decision to begin building my own practice. It not only explained the business aspects but also described how to make me personally satisfied with what I was doing. I call this book my "Private Practice Bible" and I am sure you will too once you read it for yourself. Good luck with your dreams. This book helped me make mine come true.

There is not much that I can add to the reviews already written, but as an admitted Francophile, I wanted to put my 2 cents in. As all have stated, this is an incredible book, not just of French cooking, but a slight peek into the French way of living and thinking. Obviously, Ina loves Paris, and all that is French, and you get that feeling as she deviates from strictly recipes, and goes into the various nuances of French life.

Those nuances are scattered throughout the book and peppered (no pun intended) in the introductions to her recipes. The photography and food styling is excellent as usual, and as long as you aren’t expecting a Jacque Pepin or Julia Child style of French cooking, then you will enjoy Ina’s more simple, peasant-style fare. She talks about the visual preparation of the French table and all the ways that you can make your dining experience as simple, fresh, and carefree as the dishes. And for those who are fellow "Parisians", she guides you through the streets and markets of Paris and gives you a tour of sorts, of that magical city.

Ina Garten has given us a new book on `cuisine bourgeois’, and one immediately wonders if the world really needs another book on everyday French cooking, since we already have great works from Julia Child and Elizabeth David, excellent works from Patricia Wells and Richard Olney, and hundreds of others, including an excellent volume from Garten’s mentor, teacher Lydie Marshall, author of the excellent book `A Passion for My Provence’. The questions become doubly appropriate with the recent appearance of Food Network colleague Tony Bourdain’s really excellent book of bistro recipes, `Anthony Bourdain’s Les Halles Cookbook’. To complete the picture of my general skepticism about book is the fact that Ms. Garten’s book lists at a higher price than Bourdain’s book, yet it has substantially fewer recipes and none of Monsieur Bourdain’s really excellent tutorials on cooking technique. Yet, here is the key to Ms. Garten’s enterprise and audience.

Ina Garten has no intention of emulating Julia Child in her writing or even in her TV shows. She is squarely in the tradition and style of Martha Stewart. Like Stewart, she started in the culinary business as a caterer and she was, for many years, a major contributor of culinary material to Martha Stewart’s magazine. All you need to do is compare the design of Garten’s books with either Bourdain’s book or even Julia Child’s books, and the difference is evident. Bourdain limits himself to pictures of dishes and series of pictures illustrating culinary techniques. Garten pictures lots of dishes, but she also pictures lots of pottery, table settings, and flowers as well. Each chapter has a prelude on marginally culinary matters.

This book is decent.

Pros: good systematic method of approaching the encounters. Mnemonics are easy to remember and make sense. The strategies it continually goes over do come together to make a sound cohesive method to the encounter. The humanistic domain & history taking chapters are solid. The complaints in the simulated cases are a lot of ‘most commons’ and probably more likely to show up on your PE. The cases include a blank soap note so you can practice writing them out.

Cons: I expected some OMM suggestions for complaints and there are none. I figured that if the book is aimed at the osteopathic exam then it would have a little more osteopathic emphasis. Not much in the simulated cases as far as ideas for differential/plan.

I think the First Aid book is better – includes differentials and plans/workup on top of what this book offers. Use Savarese and/or Nicholas & Nicholas for the Osteopathic stuff.

For those of you who wonder how they grade test takers, this book has it. This test is a big waste of money and time. It’s just another way to for the AOA to make $$$, but you have to pass it anyway.

When I was a student, I had no idea what criteria they used to pass students. This book has it. You will not find the criteria online. Instead, you always hear vague "criteria" on what people think they did to pass. Just buy this book. You’ll wont regret. I had the mistake of relying on the USMLE CS and that didn’t help for COMLEX PE.

I used this to prep for PE in June 2013 – I hear SOAP notes have changed from handwritten to typed, but I believe this will still be very helpful.
Plenty of tips for patient interactions, organized history taking and development of differential diagnosis, algorithms for writing SOAP note as well as plenty of cases to review – works best to review with another person.
